This post is going to be my shortest ever, I can feel it! Don't worry, I'll make it up to you tomorrow with a nice long one.
Here I am at the 19-20 week mark. That's supposed to be about the halfway point, but for me it's more like the first trimester. My gestation period rivals that of the great pachyderms. Just as well because I have yet to purchase a single sock for this child. I don't really feel any urgency about that either, I seem to have this sense that an entire wardrobe and nursery will come out with the afterbirth.
So I went to a Mother's Day brunch with my mom on Saturday. It was a salad pot luck, so I made Brad's family's famous 7-bean salad. It's not the kind of salad that actually looks very tasty, but once you've tasted it there's just no going back. Unless it's for seconds or thirds.
Brad stole a bowl of it the night of. I didn't realize it at first, I was laying in bed reading (The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton). Then I heard Brad say, "(mumble mumble) better than sex."
"What?" I asked, sitting up, "whats better than sex?"
He guiltily held up the bowl. It really is that good. Or maybe I'm that bad?
When a woman brings a dish to a pot luck, she watches surreptitiously to see who is eating it, and how much. She fantasizes about being asked for the recipe, and wonders if she ought to have brought a few copies of it to hand out. If her dish is ignored, she will feel slighted.
Normally I would be doing that very thing, but with this salad I was actually hoping no one would eat it so I could bring it home and serve it with dinner that night. And breakfast the next morning and so on.
At our table there were seven women, and only two of us did not have some version of the name Marie, one of whom was a very tired woman of about my age. My mom and I filled our plates once and were full. We watched then in awe as the other five women repeatedly filled their plates and quickly polished them off.
When it was time to go I was thrilled to find my beans virtually untouched. We picked up the kiddles from the kiddle area where they were being watched by some very responsible 12 year olds. Jessamine told me angrily that the girls had continually called her "Baby." "I'm not a baby," she said, "I'm a big gworl!" And at the wisened age of 2.5, indeed she is.
7 Crack -I mean Bean- Salad
1 can each:
kidney beans
garbanzo beans (chickpeas)
butter beans
great northern beans
lima beans
wax beans
green beans
1 white onion, chopped
1 cup apple cider vinegar
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 tsp. table salt
1 tsp. Lawry's seasoned salt
1/2 tsp. oregano
1/4 tsp. pepper
Drain and rinse the beans and put them in a large bowl with the onion. Mix the other ingredients in a separate bowl until the sugar is dissolved. Pour over the beans, cover, and refrigerate at least overnight.
Sunday morning Brad kindly took the kids to church by himself so I could watch porn and engage in heathenistic activities make Pioneer Woman's apple dumplings for our family brunch. I had just gotten started when my MIL and SIL Delanie called to wish me a bittersweet Happy Mother's Day, bittersweet because Brad's beloved grandmother passed away last week.
"Are you excited?" Delanie asked (about Mother's Day, not Nynee's passing, you sicko).
I was taken aback, then I remembered that her son is only two and she hasn't yet learned that breakfast in bed and all that jazz only happens on commercials for Hallmark and franchise jewelry stores. Cackle Cackle! Not at all, we spend such days slaving away in the kitchen, that we may concoct delightful vittles with which our spouses and children may then honor us. And then we wash the dishes.
As far as the apple dumplings are concerned, let's just say you can't die until you've had them. And once you've had them you'll probably be three steps closer to a heart attack, so it's just as well. They were extremely easy to make, and something kids can help with. Pioneer Woman put together an excellent tutorial here.

27 Excellent Points:
You are very cute pregnant! Me? Not so much.
How are you liking Age of Innocence? I just finished it a couple of months ago.
Glad to know someone who has made those apple turnovers. I've been dying to try them, but I haven't had any opportunities to make them. I know I'll need to make them for guests, so I'll be forced to share. I can't trust myself around things like that. Especially while pregnant.
Skinny pregnant people make me look fat!
Yummy recipe!
Ooh, bean salad. I heart bean salad.
I am going to make that for Andy one day sounds dee-lish!
My sister's due date is June first and she can't wait. She said she's tired of waddling and peeing.
Hopefully she's not doing both at the same time! ;o)
Yes, the dress makes you look pregnant, and it looks very nice on you. Thanks for re-highliting (is that a word?) the Apple Dumplings recipe! Hope you had a Happy Mothers Day!
Um, I get breakfast in bed every mother's day since the kids basically took over the kitchen five years ago. Arielle made me apple- pecan coffee cake from scratch. Ana made my coffee, frothed the milk and sprinkled cinnamon on the top. Mekare picked out my favorite yogurt.
Should I be feeling guilty? I kind of do...
Speaking of not buying even a sock for your baby...has Keisha talked to you yet? I got your address from her and asked her if you might be interested in some (very) gently used baby clothes. She said yes, but I wanted to make sure. I am going through Delilah's newborn and 3-6mths stuff this week and if you are interested I will send you the really nice stuff.
Hey Marie... just wanted to wish you a very Happy Mother's Day while there's still a few seconds of it left. Hope you had a great one!
Yer glowing lass, I was looking at the recipe imagining the extreme farting and thinking it looked interesting until I got to the cup of sugar, it just doesn't seem right to me, just odd, you yanks and yer sugar and we Brits get the bad teeth jokes.
What a lovely little preggy-person you are!!! That's a great pic.
I absolutely lurrrrve that bean salad...and I do believe that we have that EXACT same recipe in our family!!! I understand not really wanting to take it anywhere..."sharing the love" does NOT mean our bean salad!!
*My mom usually doubles the recipe to make sure she has leftovers!!!
Now I'm over to check out that apple dumpling recipe!!!
toodles!!
You look absolutely beautiful, Marie!
There was something off about this Mother's Day. I didn't even get a card from Peter.
Stephanie- yes, I would be most appreciative, and would be happy to cover shipping.
Loraine- yes you should be feeling the utmost guilt!
I've made those apple dumplings, and they are as good for breakfast as they are for dessert.
The recipes look delicious. You look beautiful. Happy belated Mom's Day, Marie. (We went to the park for Mom's day and ate pretzels and gatorade so I wouldn't have to cook... &;o)
So that's what my wife will likely look like in 6 or 7 weeks... We haven't done anything to prepare yet, we're hoping for all the "stuff" to just magically appear at the end of a rainbow in our back yard some sunny weekend morning.
You look fabuloso!
Sorry about Brad's grandma passing away.
One of the family issues I mentioned was my grandma. She is on her death bed. I called her last night and we could barely have a conversation. She kept falling asleep every few minutes and could hardly hear me. I cried hard after I hung up the phone.
You look great. And thanks for the salad recipe. I think I'll take to our 4th of July family get-together.
I really do stress over what to bring to a potluck or get together because I always want to bring the winning dish... it's pretty sad I know. But you really just got me thinking that I need to make some better than sex cake soon. Yum!
not the queen- I'm not really sure. Sometimes I'm in awe of a certain passage, at others I'm annoyed by all the vagueness. I think she expects the readers to really read into everything she says to get what's going on, but living in another time that's kind of hard to do with any amount of accuracy.
This is a short blog post?
When I still got pregnant, I looked like you look at about three days post conception.
Actually, now that I think about it, I'm seven and a half years post delivery on the last child and I STILL look more pregnant than you do.
I think I'll go make some PW food and drown my sorrows.
I was going to say..."oh sure, like there are REALLY seven different beans in it..." but holy hell, there it is in the recipe. I couldn't even have told you seven beans if you had asked me and one of them would have been Mr. Bean and he is clearly not in this recipe so you could have had an eight bean salad if you had been cannibalistic. I'll stop now.
OMG, those look delicious - but can I just say you look fabulous?! Wow!
LOL, Conner likes to go outside to feed the gwirls. Oh, yeah, I mean squirrels.
Oh, and Yum!
-Gladis
You look beautiful!
And I love that salad, too!
And by the way - that was not your sortest blog ever but I still read the whole thing, Mommy.
I was joking about the shortest blog ever thing, this post was originally even longer. I cut it down by about half, believe it or not. :P
I look more preggers than you do, sad to say I'm not preggers.....just look like I am.
You look cute!
I've been using that apple dumpling recipe for a couple of years now, we just love it in our family, probably one of the top 10 reasons why I look Preggers.
:(
I think I wore that exact shirt yesterday and looked the same even though my youngest child is 4. Why wasn't this style in when I was having all my kids?? Now I just look like an idiot. You look adorable, however, and make me jealous because I get a little nostalgic for pregnancy sometimes... *sigh*
